When is Nepali New Year?

BS yearNew Year's Day (Baishakh 1)
2083Tuesday, 14 April 2026
2084Thursday, 15 April 2027

The date moves by a day or so between years because Bikram Sambat year lengths vary between 365 and 366 days while the Gregorian year follows its own leap-year rule.

What is नव वर्ष (Nava Barsha)?

Baishakh 1 is the first day of the Bikram Sambat year and a public holiday in Nepal. The new year starts in spring, around the time the sun enters the sign of Aries (Mesh Sankranti).

BS year = AD year + 56 or 57

From Baishakh 1 to the end of December, the BS year is 57 more than the AD year (April 2026 → 2083). From January to the end of Chaitra it is 56 more (January 2027 → still 2083).

New year, new records

The BS new year is not Nepal's financial year — that starts on Shrawan 1 in mid-July. See Nepal's fiscal year explained for what changes when.
