The Gregorian calendar is the internationally accepted civil calendar used for most international dates and schedules. It has 12 months, and its leap-year rule adds February 29 in selected years to keep the calendar aligned with the solar year.

What is the Gregorian calendar?
The Gregorian calendar is the civil calendar used internationally for everyday dates. The U.S. Naval Observatory describes it as the internationally accepted civil calendar. It was introduced in 1582 as a reform of the Julian calendar.
The calendar numbers years in the system KhataIN labels AD (Anno Domini). You may also see CE (Common Era), a secular year label used for the same year numbering. A date such as “September 23, 2026” uses Gregorian month, day and year values.
The months and year
The Gregorian year begins on January 1 and has 12 months: January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November and December. Most months have 30 or 31 days; February has 28 days in a common year and 29 in a leap year.
How Gregorian leap years work
The rule is not simply “every fourth year.” A Gregorian year is a leap year when it is divisible by 4, except a year divisible by 100 is not a leap year unless it is also divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year, while 1900 was not. The U.S. Naval Observatory provides this rule and examples in its calendar reference.
Gregorian dates and Nepal’s Bikram Sambat calendar
Nepal uses Bikram Sambat (BS) as its national calendar, while Gregorian dates are also useful for international coordination and many digital systems. The calendars have different New Year dates: the BS year begins around mid-April, while the Gregorian year begins on January 1. Therefore a BS year overlaps parts of two Gregorian years.
There is no single exact year-number subtraction that converts every date. A complete conversion needs the year, month and day because the date’s position relative to the BS New Year matters. Use a calendar or converter that has the relevant Nepali month lengths instead of estimating from the year alone.
