Fans often say the Nepal Premier League (NPL) is "officially recognised by the ICC". For the 2026 season, that is broadly right, but the details matter. This explainer sets out what the sources actually say.
What happened
On Friday 16 October 2026, the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) announced in a press release that the International Cricket Council (ICC) had officially recognised the third edition of the NPL. The Kathmandu Post, Onlinekhabar, Kantipur and Ratopati all reported the announcement that day.
According to CAN, as quoted by the Kathmandu Post, the sanction:
will significantly contribute to the development, expansion, and international profile of Nepal's domestic cricket.
What status the matches have
Reports after the announcement describe the status of the matches like this:
- The Kathmandu Post (23 October) says the ICC sanctioned the third season on 16 October. Matches have official Twenty20 status, so runs and wickets count towards players' career statistics.
- The Kathmandu Post (25 October) says every NPL match now carries official T20 status.
- The Post (22 October) and Republica describe all matches of the third edition as recognised "List A T20" fixtures, whose performances count towards official T20 statistics.
- Wisden says the tournament has this status for the first time in 2026.
So the confirmed position is this: the ICC has sanctioned NPL 2026, and its matches count as official T20 matches for player records. NPL games are played between franchise teams, so they are not T20 Internationals.
It covers this season only
The Kathmandu Post reports that the sanction covers the third season only and does not carry over to future editions automatically. Whether 2027 and later seasons are recognised will depend on new decisions.
Conditions attached
The Kathmandu Post reported several conditions linked to the sanction:
- Overseas players, including retired players, need a no-objection certificate from their home board.
- A player who took part in an unauthorised private league in the six months before the NPL is not eligible.
- CAN must submit a review report within 60 days of the final.
- The ICC Anti-Corruption Unit monitors venues, dressing rooms and teams.
Overseas player rules
Each franchise may have six to eight overseas players in its squad. No more than four can play in an XI, and at least one must come from an ICC Associate Member country, per the Kathmandu Post. Onlinekhabar's 16 October report said franchises could now sign overseas players without a cap on numbers. The Post's later and more detailed account gives the six-to-eight range, which is the figure we use.
What we could not confirm
- No ICC statement. We did not find an announcement on the ICC's own website. Everything above comes from CAN's announcement as reported by the Nepali and international press.
- Unclear wording. Reports use different phrases, including "official T20 recognition", "official T20 status" and "List A T20". We have not seen the ICC's own wording.
- Earlier seasons. No source we read gives the formal status of the 2024 and 2025 seasons. Wisden and the Kathmandu Post say only that official status is new for 2026.
We will update this page if the ICC publishes its own statement.
