Understanding PAN for Individuals and Businesses in Nepal

A Permanent Account Number (PAN) is the most basic requirement for any financial activity in Nepal. Whether you are a salaried employee or a business owner, your tax journey starts here.

1. Why is PAN Mandatory?

PAN is required for receiving salaries above a certain limit, purchasing large assets like vehicles or land, and for all business registrations. It helps the IRD track your tax contributions and ensures you are a law-abiding citizen.

2. Individual PAN vs. Business PAN

A Personal PAN is linked to your name and citizenship, while a Business PAN is linked to your firm or company. If you are a freelancer, you can often work under your Personal PAN, but as your business grows, you may need to register a separate entity.

3. How to Apply?

The application is entirely online through the IRD portal. You simply fill out the form, upload your photos/citizenship, and visit your nearest Inland Revenue Office (IRO) for verification.

Once you have your PAN, keep your tax documents ready. KhataIn stores your financial history securely, making it easy to provide proof of income whenever needed.
